About Smart Financial Lifestyle and Paul Mauro

Smart Financial Lifestyle is an independent financial-education publisher that turns 50 years of retirement-planning casework into books, free calculators and plain-English answers for people at or near retirement.

It is owned by Smart Financial Media Group, LLC in Westborough, Massachusetts, and written by one person: Paul Mauro, CLU, ChFC, who entered financial services in 1974 and wrote more than 4,000 personal financial plans before retiring from advising.

Smart Financial Lifestyle provides financial education only. It does not give personalized investment, tax or legal advice, and Paul Mauro is not a registered investment adviser.

What Smart Financial Lifestyle does

Retirement and estate books

Six digital titles and three paperbacks covering Roth conversions, longevity planning, estate structuring and financial grandparenting. Each one is written to be read in an evening and acted on the same week, not shelved. Start with the Retirement Pro Bundle.

Free retirement calculators

Seven tools that run the actual arithmetic on 2026 IRS brackets, including a Roth conversion calculator that shows how much bracket headroom you have left, and an IRMAA calculator that prices the Medicare surcharge a conversion can trigger. No email required to use them.

Free checklists and guides

Seven downloadable PDFs, including Top 10 Questions About a Roth IRA Conversion, the Final Finance Checklist and a Guide to Building a Smart Financial Estate Plan. They turn a vague worry into a list you can work through. See all seven.

Articles and reference pages

More than 300 articles on retirement income, taxes, Social Security and estate planning, plus reference pages for how each state taxes retirement income and what 77 large employers match in a 401(k).

Learning Center

Government and IRS changes explained in the order that matters: a Short answer, then exactly who it affects. Most headlines do not touch the average retiree, and the Learning Center says so on the first line instead of burying it.

Live seminars and workshops

Paul has run more than 100 seminars and workshops for community groups, employers and associations. They are teaching sessions, not sales presentations — nothing is sold from the stage. See upcoming dates.

What makes Smart Financial Lifestyle different

One named practitioner, not an anonymous content team

Every article and book carries Paul Mauro's name. He entered the industry in 1974 and wrote more than 4,000 personal financial plans for real families between 1974 and 2004. NerdWallet, Investopedia and The Motley Fool publish through large rotating editorial staffs; here you can see exactly whose casework an answer came from, and email him about it.

Nothing to sell you but a book

Paul is retired from advising. Smart Financial Lifestyle charges no assets-under-management fee, sells no insurance or annuities, and takes no referral commission for pointing you at a product. The most it will ever ask of you is $24.35 for three ebooks. That removes the conflict of interest built into most free retirement content.

Calculators that do the real math, ungated

The seven calculators run current 2026 IRS brackets and standard deductions from Rev. Proc. 2025-32. The Roth conversion tool models paying the tax from the IRA versus from outside cash and reports the bracket room you have left. Many competing calculators are lead-capture forms that hand you a generic number after you surrender an email address. These ask for nothing.

Education, stated plainly as education

Smart Financial Lifestyle does not give personalized investment, tax or legal advice, and says so on the page rather than in a footer nobody reads. Paul is not a registered investment adviser. The job here is to make you a better-informed client of your own adviser, CPA or attorney.

Plain answers about whether a headline matters to you

Financial news is written to be alarming. Learning Center entries open with a Short answer and an Affects line, cite the agency document itself rather than a news write-up of it, and will flatly tell you when a change does not apply to you. That is the opposite of how most finance publishers monetize attention.

Who uses Smart Financial Lifestyle

  • Pre-retirees roughly 55 to 70 deciding whether and when to do Roth conversions
  • Retirees managing required minimum distributions, Medicare IRMAA surcharges and the order they draw income in
  • Grandparents funding education or passing money down without triggering gift and estate problems
  • Adult children helping a parent with estate documents, long-term care costs or an inherited IRA
  • Do-it-yourself investors who want the underlying math, not a recommendation
  • Employers, community groups and associations booking a retirement-education seminar

Readers are overwhelmingly in the United States, and most arrive with one specific question — whether to convert, what a conversion does to their Medicare premium, or how to leave money to a grandchild without creating a tax problem.

The team behind Smart Financial Lifestyle

Paul Mauro, CLU, ChFC — founder and author

Paul entered financial services in 1974 and spent the next three decades writing financial plans — more than 4,000 of them between 1974 and 2004 — for families across New England. He founded Legacy Financial Advisors, Inc. and built it to over $1 billion in assets under management; the firm still operates in Westborough, Massachusetts. He holds the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) designations, and is now retired from advising. Smart Financial Lifestyle is a publisher and manages no client assets.

Why the company exists

After Paul stopped taking clients, the same questions kept arriving from people who no longer had anyone to ask — questions he had answered in person thousands of times. Smart Financial Media Group, LLC was formed in 2024 to put those answers somewhere anyone could reach them, for free or for the price of a paperback, without first having to hire an adviser.

“It's not cut and dry, it's ragged and wet.”

That line is Paul's, and it is the editorial rule for the whole site: real financial decisions are messy, so the writing here shows the trade-offs instead of pretending there is one right answer.

Team composition

Smart Financial Media Group is a small operation. Paul writes and reviews the financial content and answers reader email himself; a small team handles the website, editing and production. Nothing is published under a house byline or ghostwritten under Paul's name.

How Smart Financial Lifestyle works

How to reach us, and who answers

Email Paul@smartfinanciallifestyle.com to reach Paul himself — he reads his own inbox. Order, download and media questions go to info@smartfinanciallifestyle.com or 351-356-4937. Most messages are answered within two business days. There is no ticket queue and no chatbot.

Buying and receiving a book

Checkout runs on Stripe. A private download link is emailed to your checkout address within a few minutes, so there is nothing to wait for and no account to create. Paperbacks ship from Amazon. Digital purchases are final once the file is delivered; paperbacks can be returned within 30 days — see the refund policy.

Using the free resources

The calculators and articles need nothing from you — no email, no signup. The seven checklist PDFs unlock with an email address, which also subscribes you to the newsletter; one click unsubscribes.

Booking a seminar

Email Paul with your date, location and audience size. He will confirm availability and agree the topic with you before the event, and typically needs three to four weeks' notice. Nothing is sold from the stage.
